A live streamed AR dance class, hosted by a remote dance artist who is presented as a video realistic avatar using real-time volumetric video. Building on the current model of live streaming to schools to enable artists and teacher to co-deliver a dance lesson, the approach hopes to increase levels of pupil engagement and active participation.
Who is doing it?
The Dance use case is being led by DanceEast whose vision is to provide the best quality dance opportunities to everyone in Ipswich, across Suffolk and beyond. DanceEast are exploring how innovative use of technology including volumetric capture and Virtual, Augmented and extended reality (XR) technologies can be used to deliver Dance education to schools and communities across Suffolk from their base at the Jerwood DanceHouse on Suffolk waterfront.
Arts and Culture contributed £10.8Bn to the UK economy (1) and remains the root of much of our soft power and key to the nations’ identity and character. In 2018, the wider Creative Industry Sector contributed nearly £112Bn to the UK economy, about 6% of our GVA.
To serve our Arts and Culture and to sustain and grow our creative sector, the UK needs to deliver excellent Arts education, that is equally accessible to everyone. For those in more rural areas this is not the case; the increased distance from teaching venues means that talent accessing arts education in rural areas are faced with higher associated cost in time, effort and carbon emissions than are those in urban areas. This diminishes access and diminishes the talent pool. Arts educators want to continue reaching talent regardless of geography and seek ways of delivering excellent education whilst mitigating the need for travel.
DanceEast are already exploring how new technologies can be used to develop an innovative model (based in the first instance of video communications technologies) that delivers affordable, high quality and authentic dance learning in schools. The approach builds a teaching programme that combines both remote and real experiences. – maintaining a human connection, whist establishing the conditions to ultimately extract an economic and creative dividend from digital technologies.
